Dear Andi,
What do you think about the Arguelles version? It was exposure to Dr. Calleman that introduced me to the traditional count. Like many, I was first taught the "Mayan Calendar" through the work of Dr. Arguelles and his proponants, and was surprised to discover the discrepency with the traditional count, which (after some reading and email exchange with Dr. Calleman) I was immediately persuaded to shift to. But I'm curious what your take on all this is. Could there be something valid to the Arguelles "adjustment", like how the Gregorian calendar "corrected" the Julian? I myself am solid with the reality of the traditional count, but I still wonder what your observation might be about all of this.

Hi Steven,
Personally, I feel that Arguelles work was a pivotal point; a turning point if you will. It brought the Mayan Calendar back to the world stage after nearly 500 years of obscurity. Arguelles, a charismatic public figure, captured the attention of millions. It took that kind of person to do it.
As to the accuracy: Arguelles' work has now been revealed as not being the true Mayan Calendar, but rather calendar he created to correct what he saw as discrepencies in "time" in our current Gregorian calendar mind-set. He brought a broiling debate about calendrics to the surface and got media attention and that has been to all our advantage. As to whether it holds value at this point, I would say the time has come to step beyond it.
The Dreamspell calendar is another form of a physical calendar - which by and large is made up of the same stuff the Gregorian is. To graduate from the ideal of physical-time - whether it is the Gregorian physical time ideal or the Dreamspell physical time ideal - is most valuable at this point.
Does the Dreamspell correct issues in the Gregorian?

Primarily the Dreamspell brings a more feminine version of the same thing, as opposed to the Gregorian very masculine approach. Either way the approach is the same, which is like trying to fix a broken fence with a broken piece of wood.
Then there is the confusion that comes into play. Many people continue to confuse the Dreamspell with the true Mayan Calendar. Or they simply don't want to move away from the Dreamspell because they have learned it and/or taught it to others. The fact remains, the count in the Dreamspell is not correct.
How off can it get?
If you're flying a small airplane and are off only a few degrees when you start, you will be off by miles and miles and miles by the time you get to wherever you think you're going. In other words, you won't ever get where you want to go, if you're off by even a small margin when you start. It's worthwhile to know the difference between the Dreamspell and the true Mayan Calendar. It is not optional in my view.
Arguelles, opened a door for more possibilities to present themselves. Now they have. It doesn't make "common sense" to continue forward with an incorrect count when the correct count is available.
It's easy to become comfortable and not wish to let go of what no longer works, simply because it is comfortable.
Many who have followed the Dreamspell for years are reluctant to let go because there is a sense of loss involved and no one wants to feel loss. It hurts.
Many people learned their Day Sign and Tone based on the Dreamspell and became attached to it. Then they find out their Day Sign and Tone is completely different in the correct count and that too is painful and difficult to switch once you've become attached.
Ultimately, we are designed to become ALL of the Day Signs and Tones. The Master Tzolkin is the reflection of us and we are the reflection of it in kind.
We, as human beings, are designed to embody the full round of 20 Day Signs and the full frequencies of the 13 Tones.
However, we start with the Day Sign and Tone of our particular individual incarnation.
Why?
Because that tone and glyph reveals the most easily available tools; you are supported by these primary tools, which is a beautiful thing! Then move forward from there. One's Day Sign and Tone is also a way to understand the different communication styles of the different directions.
For example Andi (that is myself) is 1 Reed. I live in an environment with a 13 Jaguar. Our communication styles are very different.
Let's just consider the directions aspect of the Day Signs

Reed/Ben or Acat'l is East (fire). The Ben glyph is picture there to the left.
The direction of the Day Sign assists one to see the ways in which we are different. This leads to ways we can build bridges of understanding. And is that not the whole point?
The Jaguar Day Sign is "air".
The communication style tends toward airy-ness, detail-oriented, sometimes a tendency to not see the connectedness or relationship between ideas; ideas are somewhat categorized.
The Reed Day Sign is "fire".
The communication style tends toward passionate, strong feeling, leaping from idea-to-idea, connecting the dots in a micro-second and assuming everybody gets it at the same time.
Realize this a quick and dirty overview, not exhaustive by any means.
Each of these communication styles are powerful and valuable.
Each adds to the whole and has value.
Two people with these two communication styles can be saying the same thing and miss each other completely.
The two are wise to factor in how different their approach can be.
The Day Signs help us grow by allowing us to see ourselves as we are seen by others. We can employ the information to grow which allows room for more possibilities.
Can you imagine the idea is to learn one's Day Sign and Tone, so that one can remain trapped there all alone being very special and set apart?
The personality loves this idea but it is not holistic or well balanced.
We learn our Day Signs and Tones to learn how to build bridges of communication that will help us connect, merge, blend and work together! That...in my view, is the whole point.
To summarize
Arguelles work was prepatory in my view. A stepping-stone in a path that is still unfolding.
Many people today don't realize that artifacts are constantly being recovered from ancient Mayan sites. There are new discoveries in the archaeological world AND in esoteric understanding. All that this ancient culture codified in stone, is still coming to light and what a LIGHT it is! What a magnificent time to be alive!
Arguelles', being an artist, brought a visual connection through his paintings and calendar creations. Others jumped in with more art, such as the Mayan Oracle cards and this further helped people connect to the ideas and gave perspective. There is nothing wrong, in the least, with any of this. It all still comes down to the fact that the Dreamspell is not the correct count. It's that simple. No matter how hard that is to swallow, it is the bottom line.
If you want to use the Mayan Calendar, as a touch-stone to greater understanding you must follow the true count. The "magic" (so to speak), is found there. Magic can be created in one's mind easily. Illusion is a powerful aphrodisiac but still, it is not real. One must determine which is more valuable to them.
